FINE GEORGE II CARVED WALNUT BALL AND CLAW CARD TABLE. An exceptional and finely preserved piece from the third quarter of the 18th century, this card table remains in exquisite condition and purity throughout.
Vibrant and beautifully patinated walnut veneers and solid woods simply glow from centuries of waxing and gentle use, resulting in a complex surface that ranges from nearly blackened oxidization in recesses to brilliant burnished reds and browns in primary areas. The turret top is matchbooked such that the burl of the walnut meets most powerfully in the center, this edged by feathered inlay and bordered with cross-banding.
It opens over original hinges and rests on a single swinging gate leg to reveal a gorgeous red gilt-tooled leather card playing surface with scooped chip wells beside each turret corner; each turret would generally host a brass candle stick to shed light on the surface while players enjoyed a hand. The carcass is beautifully crafted with complex curves and waves around the turrets. A single drawer is set in the center of the apron, this with period brass hardware that is an early replacement of an earlier knob; the drawer is crafted with oak secondary woods and beautiful tiny dovetailing. Four cabriole legs raise the table, the front two with fine and crisp carvings of tied foliage, all four terminating over most excellent ball and claw feet. Each foot is carved with precision, the talons scraping the floor with handsome knuckle formation and crisp nails. This is a most fine and beautifully preserved card table - powerful in presentation, excellent in craftsmanship, pure in structure. It is an outstanding selection for the serious collector of fine period furnishings. 26 3/8 H x 33 5/8 W x 33 D (open as a card table); 27 3/8 H x 33 5/8 W x 16 3/4 D (closed).
